Essay 13
Hypocrisy:
In To Kill a Mockingbird, and In Every Day Life.
(TS) The dictionary definition for hypocrisy is, "a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess." (C) Hypocrisy is not right. (C) When somebody says that they do not like to do something, then later, you see them doing that, there is obviously something wrong. (CS) Hypocrisy can be very offensive, and it is practically lying to people!
(TS) In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, hypocrisy is written all over chapter 24. (SD) The chapter focuses around a few ladies having a seemingly pleasant chat, but, they are actually talking about something awful. (C) They start talking about how they feel bad for a tribe of people, but when their talk moves on, they start to say racist things toward black people. (C) When the ladies first started talking, they seemed very nice, but after you pay closer attention to what they said, the things that they say are racist and hypocritical. (Loose Sentence) (SD) As if this isn't enough, one lady even refers to a colored person as hers, as if the person is just an object. (C) The ladies talking about how bad they felt for the people in that tribe, then saying that somebody is owned by one of them is a perfect example of hypocrisy. (C) The worst part is, none of the other ladies really say anything about this statement, meaning that they don't mind it! (CS) The 24th chapter of the book To Kill a Mockingbird gives a great feel for some of the characters' personalities by showing how hypocritical they are.
(TS) Hypocrisy is found in many different places in life. (SD) Many people say hypocritical things without even realizing it. (C) When I was younger, I told one of my friends not to eat anything before dinner so we wouldn't ruin our appetite. (C) About a week later, I was very hungry before dinner so I went to the kitchen to get some food. (Periodic Sentence) (C) I did not realize it at the time, but that was a hollow thing to do. (SD) Racism is also very hypocritical. (C) People used to always refer to somebody who's skin was colored as inferior. (C) The white people did not think about how they were exactly the same. (CS) Hypocrisy is everywhere: from your own life, to something that is looked upon as simply terrible.
(TS) Hypocrisy can be found in books, and in your own life. (C) It is offensive, and it is commonly frowned upon. (C) As a matter-of-fact, people are often hypocritical without even realizing it. (CS) These things are terrible, when you say something hypocritical, it's even like lying.
Self Assessment:
I think that this was a great essay. I feel that my body paragraphs were very strong. My concluding sentence for my last body paragraph really stands out to me. Even though I feel great about my body paragraphs, I think that I could have done better on my opening and closing paragraphs. I think that I would give myself a B- on this essay.

Ryan,
ReplyDeleteI truly love the last sentence of your second body paragraph and the way you used "simply awful". this essay might get an A if you really reviewed it multiple times to squeeze out small errors and unnecessary words.
-Cooper
"...person as hers; as if the person is just an object..."
ReplyDeleteRyan, in the sentence above, the semicolon should be comma. A semicolon is used only when an independent clause (a sentence) is on both sides of the semicolon.
Also, review the definitions and examples of loose and periodic sentences. Yours are a little rough right now.
Good luck!
