Essay #2
Education

(TS) Education has been a privilege to people forever. (C) Many people never have the opportunity to become educated, however. (C) Educated people were thought of as our leaders, in the past. (C) In fact, women getting an education used to be unheard of. (CS) Education has changed a lot over time, but it has always been an integral part of our society.
(TS)The theme that I think is most noticeable in Chapter Two in To Kill a Mockingbird is education. (SD) First off, the most obvious supporting factor to this is Scout, the main character, who goes to school for the first time. (C) Scout becomes disillusioned on her first day of school when she gets in trouble for already knowing how to read and write. (C) The teacher feels that because she already knows how to read and write that it will hinder her education. (SD) Some kids in her class are poor, which results in them having a worse education. (C) Scout defends Walter because he cannot express himself; he can not explain that he does not have the money to bring a lunch to school. (C) Scout gets in trouble a second time for trying to help Walter explain why he does not have a lunch. (SD) Scout talks to Jem about her teacher, and learns that the teacher is bringing the Dewy Decimal System to the first grade. (C) Ms. Caroline is a college educated person who thinks she knows more than anyone else who lives in Maycomb. (C) When Ms. Caroline showed the class flash cards about the Dewy Decimal System, she did not expect the class to respond to them; she expected them to just sit there and listen. (CS) Overall, education, and teaching are everywhere in this Chapter.
(TS) Education is a huge part in everybody’s live. (SD) If you do not receive an education, you are likely to have a bad job or no job at all! (C) You need to know the skills required to do that job, for example, to be a lawyer, you need to know the terms used in court, etc. (C) This relates to Obama’s Speech to the Children because when Obama spoke, he spoke about the importance of education, and helping it to promote our society. (SD) “Above all things I hope the education of the common people will be attended to convinced that on their good sense we may rely with the most security for the preservation of a due degree to liberty.”(Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, 1787). (C) People in today’s society need a good education to advance themselves, not just to get themselves ahead, but to get society ahead. (C) Overall, the more we are educated, the more we will be able to tell right from wrong and the more we will be able to help the society. (SD) The biggest hindrance to education is its cost. (C) For one year of college education, it costs about 40-50 thousand dollars a year. (C) As educating the society is a good idea, not all people can afford this education. (CS) Though I strongly believe that education is important, I can see how it is not available to everybody.
(TS) In summary, education is a very valuable asset to people who can both afford it, and people who can not. (C) Many people take education for granted, especially in the United States. (C) In both the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and in our lives, it is evident that education has changed a lot over time. (CS) Education may not be the answer to everything, but it is in our social, political, and international environment and our future depends on it.

  1. Ryan,

I really likes how you used education in our society in your opening paragraph. However, in the first paragraph, it would seem a little more pleasing to the eye if you put "however" at the beginning of the sentence. I also would suggest leaving an empty line in between each paragraph, so the reader can know when each paragraph is starting
